Hand Melons have arrived at Stewart’s!

A sure sign of August. Hand Melons from Greenwich, NY have arrived at Walter Stewart’s! This heirloom variety of muskmelon is a delicious summertime delicacy! The taste of a perfect Hand Melon will alter your perception of how a fresh melon should taste. They are so fully-sweetened and fragrant that they actually exhibit an intense floral aromatic that pleases the senses. These fully mature melons have the full sugar potential that immature fruit can never achieve. They are only available for a limited time, typically August.

Peak Season: Sumo Citrus

Now is the time when most citrus fruits are at their sweetest and juiciest. Stewart’s has so many delicious citrus varieties to enjoy, from Stem & Leaf Tango Mandarins and Ruby Tango Blood Oranges to Cara Cara Navels and Heirloom Navels. And Walter Stewart’s has the sweetest fresh-squeezed OJ! One of our favorites is the Sumo Citrus. This colossal piece of late-winter citrus has its origins in Japan (where its known as the Dekopon) and is now grown in California’s Central Valley. Beneath the easy-peeling skin, Sumo segments are so plump with juice they literally pop! These are the perfect mandarins for creating orange supremes. Sumo juice is super-sweet, abundant and refreshing. Look for the distinctive top-knot crowning each rugged-looking orb.

Peak Season Citrus: Minneola Tangelos

Now is the peak time to enjoy Minneola Tangelos, also known as “Honeybelles”, a delicious cross between a Dancy tangerine and a Duncan grapefruit with flavor characteristics more like a tangerine than a grapefruit. They are a winter delicacy, bursting with a juice so intensely “orange”, it suggests orange liqueur!

Honey I Shrunk the Squash!

honeynut_squashFresh Fall Fare: Honey I Shrunk the Squash!
Fresh to Walter Stewart’s, Organic Honeynut Squash from certified organic Hepworth Farms, a seventh generation family farm in the Hudson Valley. Honeynut squash is a butternut squash cross that fits in the palm of your hand and has about ten times the sweetness and squash flavor of the workaday butternut.
There are many ways to serve squash but here’s a great recipe from food.com that works with Honeynut Squash as well as Acorn, Butternet and many other varieties of winter squash. You may use other squash – you may even peel and cut the squash into bite size pieces, bake until soft, pour the honey mixture over and return to the oven for 5-10 minutes. Cut a thin slice off each half so the squash will sit nice and even.
