The initial idea for Walter Stewart’s Market was to house the baker, the butcher, the grocer and others under the same roof. Over time, our departments have expanded to include local finds, organic options, as well as specialty products from around the world. As a true community market, we have many seasonal options and features each week to add to your menu. Don’t see something? Our helpful, friendly staff can help you find what you need! Our Online Store mirrors our Market with both curbside and delivery options available. We have a full service deli with a hot foods bar, fresh salad station, hot soup station, the best sandwich selection in town, fresh-from-our-kitchen prepared meals to go and our team is always ready to make your party or gathering the best! You can order online or in person daily. We are committed to offering the highest level of customer service possible and are always on the lookout for new foods and products! We love suggestions!

Stewart’s Wine & Spirits

Stewart’s Wine & Spirits, founded in 1974, moved to our new location just adjacent to Walter Stewart’s Market at 215 Elm Street in 2016. We have a helpful, knowledgeable staff with a well-curated selection of fine wine, spirits, craft beer, hard seltzers and ready to drink craft cocktails. Let our team help you plan your next event. We also offer regular wine tastings as well as online shopping with curbside and home delivery options. Get your Walter Stewart’s groceries delivered with your wine!

Walter Stewarts 115 Year History

As a pioneer in the New Canaan retail scene, family-owned and operated Walter Stewart’s Market takes pride in setting high standards for quality and dependability.

Founded in 1907 by an enterprising young grocer from Ireland, family patriarch, Walter Stewart, opened his “cash and carry” store on Main Street opposite Town Hall. Groceries were delivered by horse and wagon, later by Model T. Over the next 20 years Stewart established eight more stores, but the Depression forced Stewart to sell all but the original Main Street store.
